Too Many Denominations and Too Few Christians

Have you ever noticed how many churches are in your area. Recently while driving down a popular street, I noticed over seven churches within a 2 mile radius. It's hard to believe there are not more Christians in our country. However, it seems that churches and denominations nowadays have become great corporate entities gathering to worship but many times failing to teach the gospel of our Lord and Savior.

I have often said, “We have way too many denominations and too few Christians.” It appears that churches have become great meeting places as they strive to become all things to all people. There is never a better time than now for churches to become one in the body of Christ.

Just in the protestant faith alone there are over 9000 denominations. Are we indeed united in our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ or are there 9000 different beliefs? It seems confusing at best.  Having grown up in the Baptist faith, I always considered myself a Baptist, however, as I grow older, I now call myself Christian which means of course, “follower of Christ.” After all, He is what this is all about. Rather than align myself with a church denomination which is man’s invention, it seems better to unite with all Christians to worship as one body. I long for all to become part of the body of Jesus.

I remember a pastor proudly saying to me once during a conversation we were having, “...well, I am a Calvinist…” I thought about his comment for a long time. I too, know of Calvin’s teachings and believe in many of them, but as I write this, I would be most uncomfortable calling myself anything less than a Christian...a follower of the King of Kings.
